Building a desk

Filed under: DIY — Russell @ 6:04 pm

I’ve always wanted to be more skilled with my hands, but I don’t think will become so to any large extent. Still, building a desk can’t be that hard, right? Right. It’s awfully simple, get the materials, cut to size, treat wood, attach legs, attach cladding and well thats it.

Ok, so I haven’t actually added the cladding yet, but I will get the wood this weekend and finish the job.

Weird

Since my accident, and now that all that insurance bollocks follow-up is out of the way, I’ve realised – I’m actually not so stressed about life.

I survived a car crash that I arguably shouldn’t have walked away from with some bruises, a few problems with my spine and neck that will heal, and not a lot else. This hasn’t meant I’ve suddenly started believing in God, and that I’m going to join a church or the like, but it does mean I’ve realised how lucky I am to have the things that are in my life.

Friends, family, my health, hell – even my job. My life has casually and comfortably slowed down.

And its great.

Iraq Inquiry

Iraq inquiry 649685a Iraq Inquiry

With a panel selected by the Prime Minister, and witnesses requested to tell the truth, neither under oath nor with the threat of prosecution, one has to wonder why on earth people who piss away tax money so easily are allowed any power.

The only reasonable outcome of this would be to see Tony Blair, George Bush, and the rest of the senior administrations of the time tried for their War Crimes.

Another inquiry, another farce, another colossal waste of taxpayers money.

Dragon Age: Origins

Filed under: Gaming — Russell @ 9:20 am

I haven’t been excited about a computer game in ages, but this game is fantastic. It has everything. As a spiritual sequel to Baldurs Gate II, Bioware have outdone themselves. There are, naturally, a few issues but given that I’m gaming on a laptop – albeit a super powerful one – the simple fact that it’s been 100% stable is a blessing.

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Ice Again? Oh Well…

Filed under: Random — Russell @ 9:47 am

I have just finished The Wind-up Bird Chronicles for the third or fourth time. I was asked why I was re-reading it, and it’s simply because the book moves me. Murakami is an unusual author, and to quote an old cliché, I just can’t put his books down; this one in particular.

The book is, for me at least, a journey. An almost spiritual experience that really makes me question what I do, and if I’m being truthful who I am. It makes me want to quit everything and go on one of those self-finding quests. Which I did sort of this weekend, just taking off after work to go walking for the weekend.

I cannot recommend this book enough. Read it.
